Heber Valley or Heber City as it’s also sometimes referred to, is a city in Northwest Wasatch County Utah and home to about 12,000 residents. Heber Valley is the long stretch of Valley just north of The deer Creek Reservoir that follows Highway 189 N. and South from Snyderville to Sundance. Heber City is the actual city within Heber Valley and it’s about an hour southeast of Salt Lake City.
This area was first settled in 1859, named after the Mormon apostle Heber C Kimball. It’s the county seat of Wasatch County and the original Heber City town Square is located on the west side of Main Street between center Street and 100 N. housing city offices and the historic Wasatch Stake Tabernacle and Heber Amusement Hall. The area was largely pastoral with dairy farms and cattle ranching throughout the early 19th century. Today, this beautiful, natural landscape is home to year-round residents and nature enthusiasts. Things to Do in Heber Valley
There are endless things to do, see, and explore in Heber Valley. While you can just go a few minutes away and enjoy all that the big city has to offer with Salt Lake City being no more than an hour away, you don’t need to leave Heber City to find great adventure.
Deer Creek State Park
This reservoir at the top of Provo Canyon is always busy as boaters, hikers, and swimmers are enjoying the cool lake. This lake is just a few minutes from downtown Heber City and offers camping, zip line tours, the Deer Creek Island Resort, and during the summer the Island Aqua Park. You’ll find a lot of residents cooling off at the Deer Creek State Park and Reservoir most summer weekends. But this is the only place to cool off: the Wasatch Mountain State Park and Jordanelle State Park both offer great lakes for paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking, and cooling off.
Hiking
There are dozens of trails all throughout Heber Valley including the Provo River Trail, which is just a mile and relatively flat to more challenging ones with boardwalks, waterfalls, and river crossings such a Nobletts Trail and Cascade Springs, Heber Valley has dozens of trails and hundreds of miles to explore throughout the Valley.
Heber Valley Railroad
This fun adventure is definitely something everyone should try at least once. This old historic railroad affectionately nicknamed the Heber Creeper takes on passengers in Heber City winding its way up through the mountains with the unique old Western gunfight and beautiful landscape through Deer Creek reservoir and Heber Valley. Throughout the year they have themed adventures, pirate trains, old Western shootouts, chocolate lovers escapes, and many more.
Homestead Crater
Talk about a unique cool off! Located in Midway just a few minutes from Heber City this unique hot Springs is definitely a hidden gem. This one-of-a-kind crater offers a geothermal spring hidden within a 55 foot tall, beehive-shaped limestone rock. Visit the resort hotel or enjoy a self-guided tour where you can experience the crystal clear mineral water as you go swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving or just enjoy a therapeutic soak.
While there’s plenty of things to do in Heber Valley alone, you’re no more than minutes to fantastic events year-round such as the unique Midway Ice Castles from January to February. Heber City Schools
Heber City is part of the Wasatch County School District and there are several schools in Heber Valley itself such as Old Mill School for prekindergarten through fifth grade, Wasatch high school, Timpanogos middle school, and JR Smith school for grades kindergarten through fifth grade. These are the top rated schools for Heber Valley but there are several others including Rocky Mountain middle school, the Heber Valley elementary school, and Midway school for grades up to fifth grade.
